If it was too easy, can an image still qualify as your "Photograph of the Year"? Does effort factor in? What if it was not taken in the city where your City Daily Photo blog is located?
On vacation in East Africa in August, my safari vehicle came upon a couple of lions lying around not far from the road. We stopped and watched for a while.
Soon a male stood up, yawned and then struck a perfect pose in silhouette, which he held for ten or twenty seconds. Hard to miss. Click.
For CDP purposes I will find one taken in my city, but to illustrate the point, here he is.
On January 1, welcome the new year with your best or favorite photograph from 2017.

Last Christmas, Jack's Granddaughter Willa was wearing one Christmas gift, a sweater brought back from a trip to Norway, and holding a second gift, a Teddy bear. What is the best gift? Grandchildren, of course.
Let's see your interpretation of "gift" on December 1.

So, the October theme of "Sensual" posed its challenges, didn't it? On November let's turn up the volume with "Rock'n'Roll."
Those who look at Jack's Blog -- Naples and Hartford in Season -- recognize that (a) when he is in Connecticut he often visits the gorgeous nearby gardens in Elizabeth Park, and (b) on Wednesday evenings in the summer he often photographs the dancers at one of Elizabeth Park's free concerts near the rose garden. Here is one happy couple rocking up a storm. How will you portray "Rock'n'Roll" on November 1?

OK, last month's theme of "Photographing the Photographer" was easy. Maybe this month's theme will be hard. "Sensual!" How will you illustrate that theme? Will you be funny? Will you be modest? Will you be R-rated or even X-rated? City Daily Photo does not employ any censors, though maybe your blog host does. We look forward to seeing the results of your artistic eye and your creativity.

This gentleman had a monstrous lens mounted on his camera. The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary has many native birds. On a typical day, one encounters quite a few serious birders and quite a few serious photographers. He had a particular bird in mind and was waiting patiently for it to appear again. I am less committed to bird photos, so I sneaked a shot of him and moved on.
"Photographing the Photographer."
We probably all do it. Which one will you show on September 1?

Don't let me interrupt you.
This month's theme for City Daily Photo bloggers is "Young at Heart." How will you illustrate the theme? Young lovers? Children playing? An older person dressing or acting young?

On July 1, City Daily Photo bloggers will post photos to illustrate the monthly theme of "Motion." Show us what you've got!

This stunning marsh lies in the Low Country of the Carolinas. I stopped on the drive south from New England to admire the view. Lovely as this particular segment of the marsh is, I could equally well have captured other segments on hundreds of miles of heavenly natural views.
There are so many wonderful ways to show off the glories of nature in a photograph. Animals? Trees? Rocks? Water? Vistas and close-ups? On June 1, the monthly theme for City Daily Photo bloggers is "Nature." What will you show?

Everyone takes photographs of food these days. Right? Well, here is your chance to use one of your food photos on City Daily Photo's monthly theme day. For May1: "Let's eat!"
Or, try a different approach. Maybe a robin and a worm. A calf on an udder. A baby and its bottle. I won't spoil your surprise by giving more examples. Let's see what you come up with.
This glorious luncheon spread was put together by a guide for the guests on a hiking trip through the Tuscan countryside. It was as delicious as it looks.

A rainy day in 2015 in the university city of Padua, Italy, was still charming. I was on my way to a museum and had the street mostly to myself. Except for a man with a strategically placed red umbrella.
In some parts of the globe, April is known as a rainy month. Whether it is wet where you are or not, on April 1 show us something to illustrate City Daily Photo's monthly theme of "Wet."

Do you sometimes take color photographs in which the color is so muted that the image looks black and white? Oklahoma City's National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum has a fine statue of Abraham Lincoln by the sculptor James Earle Fraser. The large statue sits in front of a monumental American flag. Lincoln's face is brightly lit and the flag is in shadows. A tightly focused image "reads" as black and white until you look very hard.
On March 1, 2016, City Daily Photo bloggers will show us a selection of "black and white in color" photographs. Please visit the Theme Day section of the City Daily Photo portal to include yours.

In mid-February we have Valentine's Day. To get us in the mood, the February 1 monthly theme for City Daily Photo bloggers is "Loving Life." What will you show? A mother and her child? Two children being silly? A couple cuddling? A friend enjoying a good belly laugh? How about a grandmother and grandson on an amusement park ride?
There are so many ways to illustrate "Loving Life." Let's see what you can do. February 1 CDP theme day: Loving Life.

This young woman was cutting and bundling thatch in a field outside Johannesburg. She heard me and looked around. She gave me a quick shy smile then turned away to continue working. The photograph appeared in a July 2016 post.
The theme for City Daily Photo bloggers on January 1, 2017, is "Photo of the Year." Interpret it however you want. The one you like best? The one you got most comments on? One you submitted to a contest? The one that best represents your city? However you pick it, please link Your Photo of the Year to the City Daily Photo Theme Day portal.

The last theme of 2015 is "Transitions," brought to you by Tanya of Around Roanoke .. A Daily Photo Blog. Tanya’s first blog was Monroe Daily Photo (Monroe, Georgia), begun after following Paris Daily Photo and others. Tanya and her family relocated near Roanoke, Virginia, and that is how she came up with the theme "Transitions," since her blog and personal life have gone through so many!
Tanya rarely picked up a camera until joining City Daily Photo, but now really enjoys photography and learning about the places she visits. She can't wait to find a new spot to photograph, and she drags her family with her! Tanya’s blog has also chronicled the growth of her four kids, two now in college. (More "transitions.") If and when life slows down, Tanya hopes to take a photography course.
This photo was taken in Troutville, Virginia, along Rte 11 in Botetourt County. It reminded Tanya of changes we will probably all make in the coming new year. . . . again, more "transitions!”

Originally from Singapore, Wilf Wang moved to Turin, Italy, in 1998. As a curious guy, Wilf explores the city for interesting places. He pokes his nose into rallies, protests and celebrations to get a vibe of the city. Wilf started his blog, Torino in My Eyes, in the beginning of 2012 to express appreciation for the beauty of Turin and to record events happening around the city.
Wilf’s partner loves to take out of focus photos and they usually turned out surprisingly beautiful. This got Wilf thinking. Most of the time, photographers pursue the sharpest images. But, have we neglected the intriguing beauty of a blurry, out of focus image? Let’s see.
The photo Wilf included here is a blurry image of the landmark of Turin, La Mole. Originally conceived of as a synagogue, it now houses the Museo Nazionale del Cinema and is the tallest museum in the world. What will you show on November 1?

This month’s theme of “Abandoned” comes to us from CDP’s administrator, Peter Hyndman of Sunshine Coast (Australia) Daily Photo. The idea came to him because of the items he finds on the beach after the crowds have gone home. Peter then got to thinking about all the other sorts of things that get abandoned in our disposable lives. Living in a rapidly growing community where there’s no such thing as an abandoned building, Peter set out to find one for theme day!
“Sunshine Coast” is the name of the city where Peter lives. Really! He started the blog in March 2008 on the day the city was formed from three separate towns. While Peter hasn’t missed a day of posting despite his particularly – uh, let’s call it “itinerant “ -- life, the blog isn’t always “live”.
A few years ago after the CDP portal was hacked, Peter offered to cobble together a temporary portal while awaiting the development of a permanent portal. Eventually it became clear that this is the new permanent portal. We owe Peter a debt of gratitude for keeping the wonky thing up and running! (Thanks, Peter.)
Before his current life of renovating his Australian home and cruising the waterways of Europe, Peter has worked as an architect, builder, sandwich shop owner, property developer, town planner and other things best forgotten!

Big, small, majestic, cozy, traditional or modern libraries reflect our hometowns. Some are full of books from the opening of their era and some are -- dare we say it? -- bookless. Show us your favourite library or your town's newest library.
Susan Kelly provides this month’s theme. Susan has been part of CDP since moving to Jinan, China, in 2010. By day she teaches English and has started graduate studies online through the University of Illinois' Graduate School of Library Science.
Susan has been blogging with CDP since 2011 at Jinan Daily Photo, which ran out of free space, so she continues recording the "City of Springs" at Jinan Daily Photo: the Sequel. The attached photo is of the Jinan Public Library built in 2013. This month’s theme brings together Susan’s love of photography, Jinan and libraries.

What does your city look like? City Daily Photo bloggers frequently show little vignettes of life in their respective cities, but rarely do we see the big picture!
Tamera is a full time wedding, portrait and boudoir photographer in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. Since leaving her job in 2002 to focus on her studio full time, she found that personal photography became more and more infrequent as her business consumed all of her inspiration and attention.
In an attempt to keep her creative spark alive in a happy maelstrom of brides and babies, Tamera joined the CDP community and began her blog, Colorado Springs Daily Photo, on November 17, 2008 (having been a big fan of Paris Daily Photo for some time by then). More than seven years later, she still thoroughly enjoys her daily search for interesting photography subjects in and around beautiful Colorado Springs. And she still thoroughly enjoys her photography business, reveling in the happy maelstrom of brides and babies!

As a photographer searching for those pesky daily photos, Stuart of Amboise Daily Photo finds it is important to look around in all directions, including this month’s theme, “look down”. This could be from your local skyscraper or just looking at what you’re standing on. This is also an open invitation to find a pattern or an abstraction that appeals to you.
Stuart is a survivor of a technology career in the US, who retired to Paris in 2008 with his wife Elizabeth. Not yet equipped with sufficient language skills, Stuart sought help from the Grand Master of daily photos, Eric Tenin, to resolve a problem… a technology one at that. Eric could not have been more gracious. He welcomed the new immigrants with open arms to his magnificent city. The seeds of a long term friendship were thus planted.
After several years of living in a small Paris apartment, however, the Americans felt a need for more space. Thus, they bought a little house with outdoor space in the small town of Amboise in the Loire valley (about two hours south of Paris). Once settled, and after years of inspiration from Paris Daily Photo, Stuart decided to join the CDP team with Amboise Daily Photo. He spreads his time among photography, woodworking, home projects, running and cycling, eating well, and travelling.

Bob Crowe has published St. Louis Daily Photo since March, 2007, with well over 3,000 posts to date. He isn’t a native (St. Louis University was the college farthest away from home that let him in) and uses the blog to gain a deeper knowledge of his adopted town. He and his wife are also tireless travelers, uploading photos from Buenos Aires to Beijing.
Bob suggested the monthly theme of Highlight and Shadow.
It offers many possibilities: the play of strong light on people, their structures and the earth itself, and also in a metaphorical sense of mood and emotion. Bob invites CDP members to blow out their histograms and share their interpretations with the community.
